"Things have changed. Ted Gioia describes modern students as checked-out, phone-addicted zombies. Troy Jollimore writes, “I once believed my students and I were in this together, engaged in a shared intellectual pursuit. That faith has been obliterated over the past few semesters.” Faculty have seen a stunning level of disconnection […] it is getting harder and harder and we don’t know what to do."

The average college student today

How things have changed

Scriptorium Philosophia

'We all know what argument comes next: “You think a newfangled thing is bad. But the ancients thought their newfangled thing was bad, and now that we’ve had time to get used to it, we realize it’s fine. Therefore, no new thing is ever bad.”'

@mpjgregoire Since internet use is heavily related to things like inattention and depression. I'm betting banning gadgets won't massively affect their academic performance since those problems would still persist since those are heritable traits although depression is stress-related and inattention gets better as the brain matures more when you get to adulthood. Since this is an average college, I'm guessing the better students already left for greener pastures elsewhere. https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/internet-use-and-mental-well-being/

@mpjgregoire The most certain deleterious effect of tech use still seemingly remain to only be myopia and its associated woes, whatever the real reason is - too much focusing to a close object or lack of sunlight due to tech use yet seemingly no one cares about that. I guess behavioral problems are just flashier.
@mpjgregoire the adults are having fun making Miyazaki photos with AI while us, the teachers, are watching the collapse of civilization 😞

@tootbrute Maybe it's like the Black Death: many will be lost, but those who survive will have some sort of unusual resistance and it will be passed on to succeeding generations.

I don't know. I worry about my children and addictive drugs, but there are other types of addiction, even harder to avoid. I'm probably a smartphone addict myself.

@mpjgregoire if only stupidity caused death.
