By Allison Bechdel (of Dykes To Watch Out For and also The Bechdel Test) - first published 1996

Things changed since then: apparently not a damn thing?

This comic is 30 years old and evergreen.

@Natasha_Jay Nope, it hasn't changed at all - or it changed so much that it just came back - either way, it stinks 😔
@Natasha_Jay
Love her work (the bits I've seen).
@Natasha_Jay omg! I recently rented this comic from the library.
@Natasha_Jay
And some of us _were_ involved with Lesbian Avengers!
@Natasha_Jay i just assume i should at least be passing somewhat, right? does meritocracy apply or am i mixing philosophies?!? 😭
@Natasha_Jay like, if i'm wearing cat ears (like a bunny, drooping down) and i have a collar with a bell, then no questions asked right? or full body countouring required? or just do your best to not freak people out? i js assume i should wait like 2 years of hrt at least before using the women's washroom, but i did when i was drunk once and nothing blew up. hmm
@hyper_ririi there's no fixed timeline, it's up to when you're comfortable and feel safe
Like a lot of things it's mostly about acting confident
@Dangerous_beans makes sense. Yeah, I think you're right. Confidence Is the main factor. And probably hygiene. But I shower about 15 times per day. So I should smell good. Also spraying myself with sc Johnson Glade odor fighting Hawaiian Breeze aerosol spray
@hyper_ririi 😅 i'm a stinky bitch and it never seems to cause a problem

@Natasha_Jay alt for the text in the comic, punctuation is incorrect bc text to speech

one slow evening at the multiplex...
lois: man did that suck!
mo: think we can get our money back?
Jillian: not after we sat through the whole damn thing, wait up, okay. I have to pee

panel 2
mo: lois, I have to go too, but I just want to wait a minute. I know jillion's cool and she's done great work with The Avengers and everything, but I don't know. I still feel kinda weird using the bathroom with someone who used to be a man
lois: mo, i'm not gonna stand around here all night just because you're having a transphobia attack, get over it and go pee or we'll leave without you

panel 3
unnamed woman, to mo: excuse me, aren't you in the wrong bathroom
Jillian: of course she's not. take a closer look, hon

panel 4
mo: uh, thanks, jillian.I'd do the same for you, you know
Jillian: thanks, but I actually don't have much of a problem. In ladies' rooms, at least nonsense, my nobody knows i'm a transsexual T shirt wore out

@inherentlee
Updated - many thanks!!
@Natasha_Jay I love DTWOF! My partner got me the essentials collection and I re-read it just about every year. So many of the socio-political concerns and arguments are present in the late 80s early 90s pages, and it's kind of reassuring that we'll keep survivng.

@Natasha_Jay @ireneista the neighborhood indie comic shop taught me more about inclusiveness in the 90s than a lot of the social action groups

...

which isn't really fair to say really since there was a *lot* of overlap. It was just easier for me to converse in comic shops.

@randomgeek @Natasha_Jay makes sense. "third place" and all that.
@Natasha_Jay it was a scene in better than chocolate too... everything that was old is old again.
SIGH
Hotel security kicks lesbian out of women’s toilets for being ‘a man’

A lesbian woman was kicked out the women's bathroom by security for being "a man" and demanded she “prove her gender” by providing an ID.

@Natasha_Jay Her comic autobiography Fun Home is really good (but not actually very fun) too.
