Google Search sucks, AI is everywhere: what should you use?

@thelinuxexperiment duckduckgo is based on bing, so it was not so good
So, whenever this comes up, I can't help but promote an interesting project - Mwmbl. They really can't replace a search engine at the moment, but their ambition is rather audacious - to basically do to publicly available information and the ability to search it, what Wikipedia has done with encyclopaedic knowledge, focusing on making it available for free, without ads, with user curation on top of an algorithm and the end goal of making searching the internet a public good.

I've been using it as my "first search" search engine, helping to curate results if possible, and then switching to a different one if there were no good results. (As I said: Not close to a replacement for the functionality of a search engine just yet). I also have their Firefox add-on helping indexing, and the web crawler CLI script is running on my server - to highlight two more things that are not very intrusive and help them out. Anyone that is interested, check them out here: https://book.mwmbl.org/ - the main place to connect would be on their matrix, if you are interested to learn even more.
@thelinuxexperiment Haven't watched your vid yet. But Kagi.
You look 10 years younger! Be proud!

@thelinuxexperiment

just wanted to give a shout out to Marginalia

while it doesn't exactly compare to the bigger engines, i sometimes do use it just for a different search experience. sometimes i do find some precious gems here and there, namely old and forgotten blogs

it can be hit or miss but yall should at least give it a shot

I switched to Ecosia a few months ago and it serves me well. You look great by the way!
"... and very verbose paragraphs that just tell you nothing, like most of my videos." 😆😆😆
Thanks for this great wrap-up! 🙂 I will definitely try out SearXNG!
A good summary! Personally I also prefer DDG, not only gives it perfect results in English, but I also need results in Czech sometimes, and DDG makes it very easy to switch back and forth between two languages. SearXNG seems to be a good alternative, but the lack of toggling my 2 main language results is a disadvantage. I also tried Mojeek but it only has an index in English and a few other major languages.
I switched to Brave Search around a year ago after using DuckDuckGo for many years. I have been very satisfied with the results and like that it does not depend on Google or Bing. The image search results are still very poor though, so I still have to fall back to DuckDuckGo for those.
I use Qwant because it has really good results in German.
One search engine I would recommend that I rarely hear about is PriEco (https://prieco.net/).
I use Kagi since about a year and a half and I like it better then the other options. They say they paid about 2% of their search budget to Yandex and I don't feel the influence of the Russian government in my searches so for now it is Kagi for me.
SearXNG really throws me off by how close it is to my last name. It doesn't help that SearXNG uses the same font as the Sears logo from the early 2000's.
I prefer to use FOSS search engines, a combination of PriEco, some SearXNG instances (mainly Disroot's) and 4get. PriEco is a hit-or-miss, they gather results from various indexes, with plans to implement their own, SearXNG works for me 99% of time, the only thing I miss from it is image filters like licensing, color/transparency etc., I use 4get for that, another self-hosted one (with DuckDuckGo indexing, it only has the licensing filters if set to that one), the main instance is annoying though with the Captcha thing, so I prefer the Lunar.icu instance. Thought about self-hosting SearXNG or 4get but yeah the search provider used sees my searches, so it might not be as good as it first seems.
I love Kagi. You get what you search. Never had anything pro russian or weir result
religion was the first " A.I. !? hold up. . .
I currently am trying out https://leta.mullvad.net. Uses google and brave but as far as I can tell no AI crap.
As much as I agree Google sucks and we should use alternatives, you new videos are always on YouTube first and paywalled so we can't even watch them on third party clients unfortunately. It's your decision but yeah I used to watch them and no longer do, a lot of content creators are doing the same thing too. Maybe if you had them here first it would encourage people to use alternatives. That's just how I feel about it though, you do what you want, it's your videos.
Well, still have a crush xD
