when im saying “gnome has regressed to the point of being unusable” i mean that

  • i can’t make a file in the file manager
  • i can’t use split panes there
  • i can’t rebind the default terminal to something sensible
  • the default terminal, a tool for power users a priori, has no settings to even change the fucking color scheme or keyboard shortcuts
  • WHERE ARE MY FUCKING STATUS INDICATORS
  • where the hell are the minimize and maximize buttons
  • no, gestures are not a good substitutions for buttons on a mouse
  • precision grabbing gnome’s title bars full of random buttons is not a good experience on touchpads
  • neither is the fact that on a mouse, i have to go to the top left corner to open the dock at the bottom
  • what does the top bar do. like genuinely there’s nothing there besides rudimentary system controls, clocks, and the dock opening button. it feels ridiculous in the age of ultra wide displays

i could go on and on and on and on

gnome, as a desktop environment, out of the box, can do literally nothing for nobody

it's not designed for ANY kind of user. everyone is eating cacti when using it
@halva except... that's not true at all? i use default GNOME without any extensions and without enabling maximize/minimize buttons and it's a great experience, better than anything else i've used. you not liking something doesn't mean no one likes it

@aylamz @halva yea same here. There are like a couple good points (why is the hot corner on the top left, but the dock on the bottom) but honestly once you get used to the keyboard shortcuts (or change them to something you like) it's smooth sailing. Honestly I get SUPER confused whenever I see gnome "hate".

I think gnome is really nice and just get's out of your way!
