My kid and I did “code-offs”. Choose a simple thing to make and see how far you can get in an hour. Me in JavaScript and web tech, and him in Scratch.

Then the rest of the family judge who wins.

@ross Nice!! Have you ever tried Battlesnakes? I did that for the first time at Cascadia PHP with my son. He did most of the code and we actually won a couple of matches.
