Working on a letter to my representatives. @murray.senate.gov @jayapal.house.gov @cantwell.senate.gov I'm a constituent & 19-year software veteran demanding urgent attention to a national cybersecurity breach documented by Micah F. Lee: “The Signal Clone the Trump Admin Uses Was Hacked.” 🧵

A Signal clone, privately distributed to Trump admin officials and used for sensitive communications, was trivially hacked. The app mimicked Signal’s interface but was unofficial and lacked any cybersecurity review or government approval.
Before the breach, journalists confirmed Trump officials were using the app via a Reuters photo. They located and analyzed the app’s source code. Post-hack, it’s confirmed: the app was compromised and deeply insecure.
This isn’t a hypothetical threat. The breach exposed internal conversations between U.S. officials—including political strategy, national security, and legislation like the GENIUS Act tied to stablecoin regulation.
This shows a massive failure in operational security. Officials used unapproved tools to communicate sensitive plans, exposing the federal government to risks that are now no longer speculative—they’ve been realized.
Even more concerning: the leaked data ties this app to discussions of digital currency policy and Trump-aligned crypto projects. The overlap of political strategy and personal financial interest is alarming.
This is not just a cybersecurity breach—it’s a potential financial crime wrapped in a national security failure. Unofficial policy-making appears to have crossed into self-enrichment and grift.
Congress must investigate whether Trump or officials used their positions to pursue personal financial gain—especially through crypto like Trump-branded coins or the GENIUS Act—on a hacked, unofficial messaging app.
Such conduct may violate the Emoluments Clause, which bans federal officials from profiting via domestic or foreign sources without Congress’s approval. That’s constitutional grounds for impeachment and disqualification from office. #impeachment #citizenimpeachment

If these messages show securities fraud, market manipulation, or ethics violations, Congress must act. These are not abstract issues—they may implicate Trump and other former officials in serious criminal and constitutional violations.
Micah F. Lee is a respected journalist & technologist. He helped build tools to protect whistleblowers and worked for The Intercept & Freedom of the Press Foundation. This article about the hack isn’t speculation—it’s a well-sourced warning from a pro.
As a software engineer myself, I know how serious this is. It reflects a dangerous culture of unauthorized tech use, poor digital hygiene, and political leaders dismissing real security threats.
I’m demanding that my representatives act now: Demand a cross-chamber investigation into financial misconduct tied to the hacked Signal clone & the GENIUS Act. Hold those involved accountable before the evidence is buried.
Also: Launch a Senate investigation into use of the “TM SGNL” app from TeleMessage. Sponsor legislation mandating secure comms oversight for all federal officials. Push DHS/NIST/CISA to immediately ban unverified secure app clones.
Finally: Demand criminal or administrative consequences for any officials who endangered national security by using this app. Congress must act before this breach turns into a full-scale cover-up. #impeachment

This is urgent. Until we address these failures in policy, infrastructure, and oversight, our government remains vulnerable to surveillance, manipulation—and corruption at the highest levels. End thread. 🧵
