The same pattern is evident in UK economic history too - by most measures, the economy has been better managed during Labour administration, worse under Tory.

I think the underlying problem is that historically the Tories have represented, and served, the short-term interests of the wealthy and privileged - that's what they're for - but the economic reality is that economies and societies always work better with more equality, less privilege. The whole right-wing project is therefore self-defeating.
