April 30, 1777, birthday of the German geophysicists German Carl Friedrich Gauss.
He made significant contributions to the field of mathematics and statistics, but was also interested in practical applications. He developed a method to accurately measure the intensity of Earth's magnetic field at any given point.

He was also the guy who developed a very practical method to determine orbits from only three observations. I guess that means he was also an astronomer?

Sounds like an astronomer to me.
