Lief Maps

  • after explorer Lief Erickson
Alternate spelling of Leaf Maps as well (since most people will mis-hear and type the English word rather than the name) and maybe a leafy Lief is the mascot ;)
Wait I think I like this better
It’s neat, but would cause confusion with leafmap.org
leafmap

A Python package for interactive mapping and geospatial analysis with minimal coding in a Jupyter environment

hard to spell, leaf, leave
Comdrima

Edited my top level comment as per rules ill add my reasoning separately:

Just throwing my idea out here, please don’t roast me alive. I really like comaps, but I understand that was already in use somewhere?

may seem random, but all the cool options were already in the matrix chat like ROAM, Cosmos, etc

Community Driven Maps

Edit: I can’t search the matrix chat but I hope the other people who also suggested really cool names pitch in here!

For some reason It sounds like some obscure linux distro from the 90s

Keep CoMaps.

I like this name: it’s cute, short and memorable. I also like that ‘co-’ can have multiple meanings (cooperation, coexisting, community, carbon monoxyde).

A quick search for comaps shows a couple different projects already using that name. comaps.de is some kind of map visualization. Using the comaps name could lead to some confusion.

When you search for “Gentoo”, you sometimes get results for a real estate company with the same name. Name collisions are nothing to fear about, unless the name is a registeted trademark in multiple countries.
Name collisions are okay if they are not in competing industries. That’s why you can have Apple computers. No one is going to confuse that trademark for an apple orchard company because it’s a completely different industry. In this case though, it looks like that other project is also related to mapping
Cartogrity (Cartography + Community)

I liked your suggestion quite a lot and came up with alternative based on it (the two words staying the same):

CartoUnity

Open Atlas

Sadly this is also already in use (the positive news is that it’s also a FLOSS project!).

openatlas.eu

Delta Maps (like the fork in the river)

It’s not bad, but

  • There might be too many projects named “Delta ___”. (…I’m guessing. I can really only think of Delta Chat.)
  • Is being a fork the only identity of this project? I would rather the name reflect other characteristics… 🤔
  • Mapp
this one sounds good. it’s short and memorable
Haha when I got the notification email I thought you meant that “merde” as an app name was good, short, and memorable 😂

    Social Street Maps

I feel like it should be something that rolls off the tongue. Something easy to search and not awkward to recommend irl. Sucks because Organic Maps was pretty good in both those cases

OpenStreetMap is the registered trademark of OSM Foundation, and they ask to please don’t use mixed and confusing names like this for related projects. From the Trademark Policy:

    You may not:

abbreviate the wordmarks, combine them with other words (“OpenStreetMapThing”), or substitute words in the mark (“OpenStreetThing” or “OpenThingMap”), especially where the new combination sounds similar to OpenStreetMap.

While they usually allow the use for open projects, it would be just easier to respect the request of the Foundation.

    Plaid Maps

    Reasoning:

    • Plaid patterns kinda look like a city street grid.

    • Plaid clothing/flannels is often worn by and associated with people who would buy organic, or are ‘earthy’ (see: Vermont Flannel)

    • This interesting thread.

    Potential cons:

Could be confused with the Plaid Bank Linking App.

Is plaid originally a colour map of place? permaculture textile techniques

So yes, plaid is as much of nature as we are, and better yet- in it's truest form, a map of place. I don't follow patterns, but make things up as I go, and tend to work in modular ways, so I can design on the fly by draping my knitting over a dress form and making decisions about what to do next, are short rows needed for shaping?

as a non-native english speaker, I have never heard the word Plaid before XD also hard to write
    LibreMaps
Unfortunately there seems to be existing software with this name.
There’s MapLibre - a fork of Mapbox before it went full commercial
Also libremap.org and github.com/libremap/ (different projects as far as I can tell, one of them dormant).
Libre Map Project - Free Maps and GIS data

That’s interesting, thanks for the links! Though seems both are dormant based on activity no? So they could be asked to let this project use the name possibly!

Edit: but of course it’s a hassle and a source for a lot of confusion at the same time I guess.

I didn’t check activity on the github entry. Just opened a couple repos to check in there’s an archived/retired message.

In keeping with the “organic” theme, my submission is:

    Free Range Maps

My first instinct is "Here We Go Again" but I think there's an existing map company that would take exception to that.

    @CubeOfCheese

I’m not sure what you mean by that

    @CubeOfCheese
The first part is a reference to my general feeling of deja vu.

The second is a reference to these guys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Here_WeGo

    Here WeGo - Wikipedia

    Oh that’s actually really funny
Organic Maps was born as a fork of Maps.Me, because the owner/developer went closed source. And the same thing is happening again, forking the same thing for a similar reason again…

    @CubeOfCheese

"There is freedom within, there is freedom without"
    "Don’t dream it’s over"

Seems appropriate for an Organic Maps fork 😄

    Maple
because who doesn’t like its syrup
Idk, but Maple might be protected, as it’s already the name of a symbolic math software.
    Folk Maps
I like folk maps, really gives the correct community/citizen cartography vibe
Could you split it up so that it’s one name per comment please? To make voting easier
Sure thing! I have the split the options into multiple comments.
Oh um. I mean like each comment is completely independent. That way when people vote the top level comments are ordered appropriately
