This is encouraging to see. It’s symbolic, but symbols matter.

The final honor guard for Pope Francis included migrants, prisoners, transgender people, the homeless and others selected by the Vicariate of Rome as a symbol of the late pope’s mission of inclusion and outreach.

@Brad_Rosenheim @c_9 It’s not. And transgender people have faced quite a few spit in the face from the church under the same pope, so it’s quite a cognitive dissonance.

@Sobex The comment was not made to absolve the church from any culpability, but rather to show how illiberal other institutions have become. And I think most people realize, and perhaps fear, that after the current conclave, any progress the church has made in this regard could be subsumed by the conservative intentions of a new Pope.
