This is encouraging to see. It’s symbolic, but symbols matter.

The final honor guard for Pope Francis included migrants, prisoners, transgender people, the homeless and others selected by the Vicariate of Rome as a symbol of the late pope’s mission of inclusion and outreach.

Transgender People Are Part of Pope Francis' Funeral Rites Today - New Ways Ministry

A miraculous "first" at a Vatican liturgy is a fitting tribute for Pope Francis' message to the church and the world.

New Ways Ministry
@c_9 Symbols are aspirational and they can lead us to the higher ground to make us better people
@c_9 I bet shaydee prance is delighted to hear that
@c_9 Perfect. And, of course, MAGA is up in arms about it.
@EndicottAuthor @c_9 it's a quick and simple sanity check. If Maga are not upset about something then it's a bad thing to do.
@c_9 Never suspected that I'd be living in a world where the Catholic Church was among the most liberal institutions in the world...
@Brad_Rosenheim @c_9 It’s not. And transgender people have faced quite a few spit in the face from the church under the same pope, so it’s quite a cognitive dissonance.

@Sobex The comment was not made to absolve the church from any culpability, but rather to show how illiberal other institutions have become. And I think most people realize, and perhaps fear, that after the current conclave, any progress the church has made in this regard could be subsumed by the conservative intentions of a new Pope.
