The Tree in Muckross Abbey

When you visit Muckross Abbey in Killarney, one thing that immediately catches your eye is the magnificent tree that grows right in the middle of the building. The tree is so large that it almost looks like it’s part of the abbey, as if the building had grown around it over time.

@donncha What a beautiful tree! Have to remember to take a very wide lens if I ever visit :)
@donncha among the myriad of emotions and reactions that Muckross National Park gave me, that tree was truly the most magical and unexpected! Like everything else in our lives Nature has allowed us to grow , build , learn and sadly destroy too.
@donncha great framing. Love it
@donncha I saw this last year! It is so stunning. Love how when you climb upstairs you can see the leaves. Loved the windows upstairs too, so magical.
@niamhgarvey agreed. It's so well restored too. A pity some of the castles in ruins around Cork weren't as well maintained, and free to access...
@donncha Gorgeous! There’s a yew tree in a courtyard of Skipton Castle in Yorkshire that was planted there in the 17th century.
@JeffreyJDean that's lovely! Do the branches reach above the building?
@donncha They do. I think the tree is 15–20 feet higher than the main roof (the building is mostly 2 storeys, with one 3-storey tower).
@donncha we didn't make it to the Abbey last week and now I'm very disappointed! Excellent photo
@willhopkins just another excuse to go back to Killarney! πŸ™‚
@donncha as if we needed one! But more reasons never hurt.
