We need to stop giving out such generalised advise but explain why a specific tactic is useful under which conditions.

For example, leaving your cellphone at home, may easier put you at risk of disappearance, as you may not be able to quickly inform your peers.
Leaving cellphones at home is important for some in some situations, and bad for some in some other situations.

Also tracking things electronically is among the safest accesable methods to store data in privacy friendly manner if well enough encrypted and the device secure enough.
