#OnThisDay, 22 April 1969, Bernadette Devlin makes her maiden speech in the House of Parliament in London. An Irish Republican, she had rejected their tradition of abstention in order to take her seat. She remained an MP until 1974.

@CarveHerName I've always wondered why they sideline themselves completely. There were several points during the last tory debacles where they could've all matched on and overthrow the UK government quite legally with their 4(?) votes. Instead they did nothing. So they get nothing, instead of getting respect.

@CarveHerName Her wiki page is an infuriating record of the establishment shutting out someone who isn't one of their own.

"The day following Bloody Sunday, Devlin slapped Conservative Home Secretary Reginald Maudling across the face when he falsely asserted in the House of Commons that the Parachute Regiment had fired in self-defence on Bloody Sunday. Asked [...] if she intended to apologise to Maudling, Devlin said: 'I'm just sorry I didn't get him by the throat'" 👌
