Why Democrats should keep talking about immigration: Democrats can once again turn immigration into a losing issue for Trump. - Reddthat

> The wrongful deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a prison in El Salvador dominated last week’s news headlines. Prominent Democrats, of course, helped shine an even brighter spotlight on the issue by demanding his release. > > But many politicians, pundits, and strategists think that Democrats are now walking into a trap. After all, immigration was a winning issue for Trump in the 2024 presidential election campaign. And most Americans have approved of his job performance in this area since he returned to the White House. > > Journalist Matthew Yglesias, for example, posted the following chart from G. Elliot Morris to support that argument on X. The graph shows that Americans rate Trump’s performance on immigration much more positively than his handling of issues like the economy, inflation and trade.

2/3rds of America wants to deport illegal immigrants. ipsos.com/…/majority-americans-support-deporting-…

I hope y’all try again, it’d be funny to see Vance beat the Democrats.

This person is obviously a MAGA troll, so I’m not responding to him; but for the sake of anyone reading this, here’s a quick fact check:

Abrego Garcia was in the US legally and was convicted of no crime. This article is very clearly about legal immigration, and his only defense was to turn it into a story about illegal immigration, meaning that he’s already conceded the point.

I’m not a conservative but I agree in principle that democrats should not be running on immigration as their main platform
oh I agree here. rights for humans not corporations, universal healthcare, taxing the wealthy and regulation, a return to civil rights by ending things like the patriot act. Basically I would like the democratic platform to be written by sanders.

I think one possible problem here is people’s idea of what “illegal” means.

Would it be illegal by means of established rule of the land, or illegal by means of some rogue branch of office declaration?

This is actually a key misunderstanding. Many Conservatives are so triggered by immigration because they think that anyone who is here without the proper authorization broke the law to do so. But it turns out there are lots of ways to be here without authorization that do not break any law.

So even the description of these people as “illegal” is a bit overloaded. Many of these people came here legally, and “just” overstayed their visa. While that is serious, and may impact their ability to legally enter in the future, it is not a crime.

Oh please, keep going with that thought process. I can’t wait until the next election!
what do you mean?
I mean importing illegal immigrants is unpopular, and hurts the democrats in elections.
Who are in US illegally. So not ones with any status at all. Even the jerks will be singing a different tune come the fall harvest.
What about Mahmoud Kahlil? How does USA feel about kidnapping people for thought crimes?
MAGA politics is all about what’s most “funny”
