I've now *fully* switched over to Debian on my personal devices.

It's not that I dislike Windows as an operating system, I've always been fine with Windows as an operating system; it's just that Microsoft have buried it under 20 layers of corporate strategy, currently mostly AI & cloud services, and I really have no interest in helping them progress it. So, as far as I'm concerned, "The Windows Operating System" no longer exists as a product that I will use

Welcome...

... to the real world.

No, never mind, that sounds flippant and/or condescending.

Good move, though.

Best description of the current state of windows!

@bitflipped Congrats and welcome to a world of greatly reduced hardware expense. I've #Debian on my desktop, laptop, and phone.

The phone is a bit bleeding edge, but my 2011-model ThinkPad runs like a dream (and I know nobody will nick it, as it doesn't look like a laptop to anybody under 30, and it's too heavy to run while carrying it).

My last desktop lasted less than a decade, due to rust (I lived by the sea), but I'm planning to have my ashes interred in a spare drive slot in this one.

Way to kind about MS.

It has been the greatest productivety suck since 1993 with ever changing menus, unmanaged bloatware and system crashes. Most recently productivity has caramelized by the move to cloud everything for subscription maximus.

@rhymerepartee 🤷‍♂️ not being kind, just reflecting my personal experience. I've not had serious problems with any version of Windows until the bloat added with recent versions.

@bitflipped

I suppose I've been a power user of office software since 1985, so I have more complaints. Once MS went to the cloud and forced subscriptions that was the end for me. To have to pay for never ending updates and reconfiguration, not to mention the time wasted trying to figure out why things don't work.

Cloud is slower. MS does not handle multiple accounts very well. Can't consolidate contacts? Come on!

@bitflipped Windows history: bugs, bloatware, troubles and overcharge of prices
@voyager this hasn't been my personal experience until the bloat with recent versions. YMMV.

@bitflipped

The fun thing was that due to the bugs, users got savvy. I can still tell the difference between my Windows and Mac students; the first are usually more prepared for trouble and know where to find things. But things change!
Sadly, the software I teach is not readily available on Linux without jumping through hoops and using compatibility layers or I would move. It would look different, too, and students would wonder about the screenshots. But who knows, in the future?
