Good read from @hrbrmstr on the Trump administration's retaliation against Chris Krebs, given that the RSA conference is rapidly approaching.

"Silence is not safety. Silence is capitulation. If the cybersecurity community cannot defend its own when the truth is under attack, then what exactly are we protecting?"

Trump’s Retaliation Against Chris Krebs — and the Cybersecurity Industry’s Deafening Silence - rud.is

Chris Krebs, the former director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), was fired by Donald Trump in 2020 for publicly affirming that the presidential election was secure and free from widespread fraud. Fast-forward to April 2025: Trump, now back in the White House, issued an executive order revoking Krebs’ security clearances and ordering […]

@zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr what are security vendors protecting? Their money. In the end its only business. Sad, but true.
@twallutis @zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr also what are the % of MAGA in that industry?
@hub @twallutis just based on the one team i worked with closely, 1-5%. But there's tonnes and tonnes of IT admin types who are part of the security realm broadly, and of those who i know closely it probably tracks with the numbers for "white men" in general, so closer to 50%.
cc @zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr
@fixiemama @hub @zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr there are also IT Security companies and people outside the US😉
@twallutis @fixiemama @hub @zackwhittaker do you take data-driven asylum seekers? 🙃
@hrbrmstr i switched my midlife career goal to ABSN from cybersecurity analyst bc as a nurse i will be, i think, much more attractive to the immigration approvals processors in Ireland. Or Portugal. Or Spain Italy Thailand Vietnam Greece Germany... Ukraine...🫠

@twallutis sure, but ppl based outside US r super unlikely to see America as somethg that was "great" when it was pillaging their politics and raping their lands for oh IDK at least a century...

so when talking MAGA we're just talking US-based and, implicit in "MAGA" is "has the right to vote in US elections aka is a US citizen"

😉🤓

that being said i welcome all the tourists to my fine city of San Francisco, MAGA and otherwise!! we appreciate the business. 🫡💸😘

@fixiemama @hub @zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr I visited the US three times. A fourth time will only when MAGA is no longer in charge and Project 2025 is history.
@twallutis @fixiemama @hub @zackwhittaker hopefully I'll still be around in 20–40 years (that's how long it's gonna take, unfortunately, when liberal democracies go bad).
@hrbrmstr @fixiemama @hub @zackwhittaker I dont fear for myself. I fear for my kids.

@twallutis @hrbrmstr @hub @zackwhittaker hard same.

...although, my boys have alternate citizenship options. as a divorcee i would no longer consider moving to either country, but both are solid options for them if needed, because my former in-laws are all quite well off.

@zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr thanks so much for this. i found the bit about interaction at RSA to be the important part:
@zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr how quickly every part of our society showed their bellies
@vitriolix aye. But these former spooks can afford to stand up, so their silence means they agree.
@zackwhittaker @hrbrmstr
Now is a good time to go mainstream with gnu, FOSS, and its principles, and not rely on the govt for infrastructure that is key to security for many, as it is changing on an uninformed whim.
