Interview: Alex Gibney film The dark money game

"Our country is being run by a small group of people who have an enormous amount of money, and they dominate our politics.

"It’s almost as if bribery has become utterly legalized."

An untraceable amount of money flows through nonprofits & super PACs to support candidates & influence political movements.

@DrALJONES What is the best tool to fight against bribery with? Is it universal income? Is it universal healthcare? I have had money and healthcare held over my head so kong I'm like.. how do u survive and fight back???

@themaskerscomic

Undo citizens' united - that's what enabled oligarchs to control govt by buying politicians.

It wasn't always thus - bill clinton did a great deal for the ruling class.

The election law could allocate a reasonable amount of public money for campaigning and disallow private donations.

@DrALJONES ok I will look into that,thank you!-- I don't like what they did to Jill Stein though ... I know they made it harder for third party campaigners to get to do things like run, join the debate, get on the ballots and I see value in third parties esp because with FRONDS like these (,who needs anemones,) --bad finding Nemo 🐠 🐟 joke that I so love

@themaskerscomic

Fronds and anemones! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜

I'm in Australia, and we're fortunate to have compulsory preferential voting, so there's no loss in voting for third parties.

@DrALJONES Susyralia sounds so cool.. I'm disabled tho and dependent if SSDI so I don't think I can move.. which means I need to fix this place... The us... Oh jeesh lol.

@themaskerscomic

Only its voting system is cool. We are a client state of the US, including secret bases, surveillance, destabilisation, cultural hegemony, etc. and a US-UK bloodless coup in 1975.

I wouldn't bother.... πŸ™‚

@DrALJONES Well a voting system is important... And I think that's something I hope we can fight for here and learn more about what's working for other countries.

@DrALJONES does this describe it well?

Or... any recommended resources to learn more?

Preferential voting

How does preferential voting work?

Australian Electoral Commission

@themaskerscomic

I will have a look and send.

Basically, in preferential voting, you number all the candidates in order of your personal preference.

Eg, say, socialist party first, greens second... down to nazi party last.

When counting happens, if the socialists don't get 50% of the vote, your first vote gets passed to your second choice,... etc.

That way, your vote can't be "wasted", and people feel free to vote for the candidates they prefer.

@themaskerscomic

no, imo, this site is - as typical of bureaucracy - confusing. Not at all user-friendly.

I'll check out some others.

@DrALJONES ok thx .. it's hard when u don't know what you are looking for exactly to know...

@themaskerscomic

are you wanting to share info with a wide audience or just for your own knowledge?

did the description I sent make sense to you?

@DrALJONES not sure maybe wide audience? But first I do need to understand and that description u have helped

@themaskerscomic

so do you have any questions about it?

@DrALJONES I get it I'm pretty sure. It seems simple enough on the surface. Just links for more info or goodr resources, if u have them handy it can find them handy. Even just one. I like to back everything up with a link.

@themaskerscomic

Here's an American link. "Ranked-choice voting" seems to be the preferred name in the US.

This simple tweak to our elections could fix America.

@DrALJONES yes and that I had heard if I thought that was close at least .. lots of ppl are proponents iof that. I told myself I'd look into it between things and keep up with it and teach my son about it... So I'm setting myself little research reminders, as I do.

@themaskerscomic

Yes, it is. I guess you understand that an oligarch-owned congress & voting system is not going to change to a more democratic one.

Imo, the main thing to fight for is to undo citizens united, ie, ban private money from campaigning. That's worth taking to the streets for.

At this point in fascist America, strikes & protests, etc are the only things that can work.

Resistance movement - Wikipedia

@DrALJONES I can't go to the streets. I struggle with multiple disabilities and jail would be deathly. Unmasked street protests are not an option for me. Other could put on n,95s but most don't. My own ppl don't care about me much less my politicians. That's ok.. bc I care about me. And I doblook for other ways to protest.

@themaskerscomic

i wasn't saying *you* have to go marching out! 😁 I can't march out either. I'm suggesting solidarity - whatever form of support we can muster, eg, spreading info.

@DrALJONES thx yeah it's been bothering me lately that I can't go to the streets. But I will find a way!

@themaskerscomic

Every single act of resistance against fascism counts, not just marching. the key thing is to help organise effective methods including online. the left is generally hopeless at organising. the right is great at it because the right lives by fear.
