It's 2025 so I blogged again, this time about remote work: https://blog.tadzik.net/the-importance-of-offtopic.html
The importance of offtopic | blog.tadzik.net

@tadzik@social.tadzik.net Nice blog post!

At my current job we (sadly) use Slack as well, and the same issue exists. We have management-approved off-topic channels, and they're all as dead as can be. Rarely someone will share a link to a youtube video and will get no replies whatsoever.

I made a private channel for my team, with nobody from management, so we can speak privately and talk off-topic without fear of managers seeing it as "slacking off", which appears to have a very positive impact on socialization inside my team, at least.

@tadzik "Me and the other consultant laughed, in text form of course. We’re not Twitch streamers, why the fuck should we have webcams? And how’s seeing someone’s blurry forehead supposed to build actual human connections?"

I will keep that quote around... Its very relatable and one of the reasons mine often isnt even attached (also thanks linux for making it not work anyway the other time). Also makes me uncomfortable anyway at times. Nobody has to see me virtually pick my nose or drink...

@tadzik@social.tadzik.net Fantastic read. I have been remote since Covid struck and am now moving to a remote-first company – your experience is thus really valuable.

Thanks for writing that up!
@ChrSt
Thanks, and good luck with the new job!

(I hope that "remove-first" is a typo ;))

@tadzik@social.tadzik.net
