So I snapped my Achille’s tendon on the weekend. I was doing a bit of #HEMA, and sparing with sword and buckler when it just went twang! A&E put me in a cast and said it looks to be completely ruptured. Seeing the orthopaedics unit at Charing Cross Hospital on Weds for a full assessment. Whatever happens, I’ll be hobbling in a cast for at least six weeks and no paragliding or full on HEMA for a few months. As it is I can barely make it up the stairs. Bother.
The A&E nurse practitioner exclaiming “Bloody hell!” when he examined me didn’t exactly bode well. ☹️
@bjn Ow, ow, ow! Tendons are tricky things. Get well soon!
@dpiponi It’s not particularly painful, except occasionally my calf muscle cramps up massively and I then say many indelicate words rather loudly. The snapping itself felt like someone kicking me hard in the heel. I should take the time to finish off a bunch of projects I have on the go.
@bjn Those cramps may be a defense mechanism. A few years back I broke my foot but after a day the injury site was completely painless. But if I tried to get around I had lower leg cramps, a long way from the injury, that forced me to rest again.
@bjn ow. Do what it takes to recover properly.
@francesco It’s basically sit still for two months. Unsurprisingly I may find that difficult to do.
@bjn finally, a reason for a VR headset.
