@mckean @eff Matrix, just like fediverse is ideal, yes. But for a commoner, it can be a bit confusing. The official instance, matrix.org, is always under high load, and choosing a new instance can be a pain, especially for a layperson. Signal is easy, and can be used as an alternative for many other apps like WhatsApp, which people are already using and are familiar with.

Signal (the app) updates your encryption keys over the internet monthly using a closed source protocol and was created by priveleged ex Facebook and ex google people. Signal (the protocol) may be good, but depending on which you are referencing I'm really disappointed in you @eff because y'all are usually SO on it but Signal is sketchy AF. Not to mention all of google plays issues.

@Sup3rN0va @eff Do you have a source for the encyption key updates? Everything I've read suggests the Signal Protocol handles every aspect of encryption.

Also, you can use Signal completely seperate from Google Play, the APK is available on their website and they have a solution for notifications too: https://signal.org/android/apk/

You might mean something else by "all of the google play issues" so please feel free to clarify if I misunderstood.
