Orbán’s Hungary Could Be America’s Future

MAGA conservatives love Viktor Orbán. But he’s left his country corrupt, stagnant, and impoverished.

The Atlantic
@anneapplebaum Anne- brilliant article and I agree that it is a sad but accurate forecast of America's future. I hope we are both wrong
@anneapplebaum
Yeah, so does plain vanilla, staight out the box greed
Or capitalism, if you prefer
Or perhaps you rather your poverty with a dash of elitism and your corruption with a sprig of cronyism
All the flavours all the time
All the gold watches and all the kings phlegm
Couldn't put a stop to us 'cause, what would you do then¿

@anneapplebaum

Makes me think back to tv show "The Americans" when US resident Martha is living in Moscow. . . and the grocery is pretty grim

@anneapplebaum The corruption is the whole point of right-wing populism (nazism, fascism, what-have-you).
The people who run that sort of movement see it as a way to enrich themselves.

The cruelty is just performative.
They do it to claim "effectiveness" with their sucker voters, whom they aim to fleece.

This was always the case with the far right. Always.

All their talking points and hatreds-du-jour are just window dressing.
