The NZ Advertising Standards Authority has released its annual report on advertising revenue. I'm hearing about it on RNZ MediaWatch, who referenced this column by Gavin Ellis;

Once again, the stats show that the bulk of ad money spent in NZ is going to the DataFarms. The handful of giant, multinational platforms owned by Silicon Valley oligarchs. Once again, I recommend @pluralistic's piece on this;

I would, but this is a terrible graph. For a start, axes are not labeled. So while I can guess that the numbers along the bottom are years, showing change over time, the numbers up the side are a mystery. Are they $ or %? Are there implied 0s after them? How many?

On the face of it, the graph appears to show that except for a big decline for newspapers, revenue for most media has been roughly flat. With digital creating a whole new advertising market, because its growth looks much greater than the papers' decline.

I'm pretty sure this is not what the numbers actually say. But it would be intriguing if it turned out it actually is.

I agree that the collective strength of the OECD could be used against the US but the unpredictable nature of this presidency is such that those countries are unlikely to act against the platforms for fear of retaliatory action. The withdrawal from the framework on Day One was heavy with symbolism.

Only newspapers have failed to maintain their revenue - outdoor has consistently increased - while digital-native has created a massive new ad market.

Are all these numbers corrected for inflation? Would that change the curves much?

@strypey @gavinellis That's fine, other countries don't really need his permission to continue taxing them. The OECD has already agreed on this. All they need to say is 'pay or we block you' and they have to choose between continuing to pay a small amount of tax or having the bottom fall out of their businesses.

I'm guessing they will need US government cooperation to actually collect the tax, or at least for that government not to prevent it. Given Orange Stalin's willingness to use tariffs as a stick, and the fact his administration represents the very "investor" class these taxes target, this already seemed ... unlikely. Pulling out of the OECD agreement means there's no chance.

@strypey @gavinellis Well, as I said: if the rest of the OECD governments have any balls at all, they will make it clear that the companies either hand it over or they get blocked and go out of business.

The rest of the world collectively has a lot more power than the US does.

a) I'm not convinced of this

b) I'm definitely not convinced the countries within the OECD do

c) It's a collective action problem

Look at the EU's pathetic response to the US refusal to keep arming Ukraine. In theory all European countries have an interest in an independent Ukraine as a buffer between them and Putin's imperial ambition. Can they get their shit together to help Ukrainians maintain it?
