@dramypsyd When I read the article itself, after reading this remark, I was surprised at how moderate and measured it sounded. I didn't see any direct reference to ABA except the citation to Kupferstein's article. For you to be worried that your article would be perceived as too extreme, the discipline must be wildly polarized over the issue of neurodiversity acceptance.
@dedicto It for sure is! I’m probably over thinking but another psychologist who was asked to provide a blurb for my book refused and told me my takes are “dangerous” so now I’m constantly worried
@dramypsyd I doubt you're overthinking. It looks to me like you are indeed navigating a minefield. Polarization is to be expected when the dominant perspective has been dehumanization as theory, and frequently torture and incarceration as practice. Anyone who challenges that can expect to encounter serious cornered-rat energy. It will be very hard for the other side to back down with grace and dignity.
@dedicto For sure! The pro ABA providers don’t want to grapple with the knowledge they promoted something harmful so they tend to dig in
@dramypsyd And from what I hear, the mindblindness theorists as well — even if they haven't put their dehumanizing theory into clinical practice. I really appreciate your advocacy for neurodiversity, as well as Morton Ann Gernsbacher's. BTW, have you met her in person?
