I asked because there is an app with an audio tour around Frankfurt (Main) and in front of Goethe's birth house, they say: "Goethe is very famous within Germany, but not outside of the country."

The person who told me about that added that he had never heard about Goethe until his German wife gave him a book by the author.

But it seems to depend on the person & the country they're from.

In France, for example, they teach about Goethe in schools.
