I still remember this. One of the things that really challenged me, and my ideas about gender early on was Iggy Pop in a dress.

It wasn't so much him in the dress that did it, it was what he said about it.

I'm not ashamed to dress "like a woman" because I don't think it's shameful to be a woman.

Once I internalized that, I started recognizing it as a key to understanding bigotry.

@oli

Looking like auntie

@futurebird An auntie I do NOT want to mess with.

@oli

I always thought Magic Dick, the harmonica player in J. Geil's Band was gay until I saw him making out with Faye Dunaway backstage in Little Rock.

@oli I think about this frequently. Actually it was on my mind 1 or 2 days ago

@oli

I liked this photo, too, but instantly thought that being a woman in a system that`s driven by patriarchy ist`n just "wearing a dress"; so many symbolized bullshit in all of these pieces of cloth and I´m not sure Iggy wanted to point out all that shit...

@oli The men-don't-wear-dresses thing doesn't match reality outside certain cultures, does it. Sarong? Kilt? Kaftan, djellaba,etc? Greek military uniform?
Ancient Greek men wore dresses. Romans not only wore dresses, but scathingly referred to men who wore trousers as barbarians.

And these men in skirts...

@oli for me it was Brad Pitt (he had not a clever statement, though)

Then Kurt Cobain, I was not even shocked.

The first time I dressed in a silky night dress and started walking as a monkey it was when I realised I had things to work out, as I never got that feeling dressing with female jeans or sweaters.

@oli so basically like any Glam band ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xmckWVPRaI

@oli Wonderful story. We need some of that Iggy punk energy today.
@oli Do you know the photographer?
@mo I do not, not offhand, no, but would be happy to credit them.
@oli By the way, this photograph was made by Mikael Jansson. Great isn't it?
@beaudaignault It is! I'll add that credit.
