NorthWestWindThis is done for the Code of Honor. Basically, to avoid patents being used against the gaming industry, video game companies file patents for a lot of different game design concept, so all developers can freely implement these mechanics without getting sued.

slimerancherI saw another video about this, Nintendo pretty much never sues anyone on gaming patents. They do sue a lot for other stuff though, like piracy or protecting IP / copyright.
