So systemd is basically a fifth column attack on Linux, by Microsoft—if you can't squish the upstart, make it indistinguishable from Windows.

@cstross

Well, I am still using one the few versions of Linux without systemd, so I am doing just fine thank you very much.

@ParadeGrotesque @cstross what are you using?

@webhat @ParadeGrotesque macOS for me. (With occasional forays into Debian w. SysVinit)

EDIT: I am old and weary and just want to get work done (writing novels). I am no longer working as a Linux/open source journalist or software developer—not for 2 decades—and I'm not looking to waste valuable writing time cat-hoovering by rolling my own software stack.

@cstross So, you're using launchd, introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. Its success at replacing init and rc scripts inspired Lennart P. to write some fanfic, AKA systemd.

Classic init and boot just didn't meet this century's requirements, they really did need to go. There were several other attempts at this for Linux (some due to NIH, some because L.P. and pals are very annoying to work with), but systemd actually managed to be the best of them, despite the warts. So it won.
