St Patrick’s Day is about celebrating a missionary, the one who ‘drove out’ the heathens from the isle— or converted them. The pagans and the queers have a long history

of being ousted from celebrations, even as they have become mainstream, commercialized holiday presentations. NY and Boston banned lgbtq+ groups from marching in their parades for decades, and those bans weren’t lifted until just TEN years ago.
Not to mention the stereotyping of Irish people

that the holiday has created, full of leprechauns and drunken shenanigans and green beers.
The reason you get pinched if you aren’t wearing green today is because it means you are a heathen, an outsider— one of my best friends growing up was both very Irish and very pagan. Rather than green,

she would wear orange, in protest. (I’m not going too deep into why orange, iykyk and if not it’s time to do your own research.)
You can imagine the torture she went through, both explaining herself over and over, and getting pinched anyways. Yet she still did it, every year.

As a pagan, a queer, and someone whose heritage certainly includes being Irish, I take no issue with the secularization of a church holiday that would have specifically excluded me otherwise… but history is important to remember. Take a moment, in your revelry, to remember where it came from.
