Many people have old class narratives for why fascism is rising across the world, such as economic anxiety and others, narratives I have even promoted in the past, however me being a more 21st century intersectional feminist and a pro-tech leftist, I propose a different hypothesis.

I think what's going on is that the internet is a revolutionary technology that has accelerated social progress when it comes to the awareness of marginalized groups, such as queer people, alterhumans, plural systems and more.

It has also created a more global and interconnected world, to the point that authoritarian regimes have to censor the internet, because now any atrocity is now instantly known across the world, even when a US aligned country like Israel commits an atrocity it's no longer possible to hide it.

And I think because of all of the above, I think there's a global reactionary backlash to the accelerated social progress and interconnectedness the internet has created. As you will notice, the reactionary backlash exists regardless of ideology.

From fascist who I don't have to explain why are opposed to it, to transphobic liberals, to communist who see queer people as bourgeois decadence. essentially what's happening is all reactionary forces are uniting regardless of ideology to oppose the accelerated social progress and liberation of marginalized groups, or what these people call "wokeness."

in fact I'll go as far as say it's the reason why now the reactionary forces are trying to censor the internet with things like project 2025. Because they're so scared of the way the internet is creating an interconnected world, that they're afraid of the possibility of it taking away their power.

ultimately the 21st century will be the battle between ultimate progressivism and ultimate conservatism within the ruins of liberalism.

@KinocKayfar Which is why we have to try to preserve the freedom the Internet provides as much as we can.
@mage_of_dragons that's why decentralized and open source technology is important, so we can continue the accelerated social progress beyond the constraints of capitalism
@KinocKayfar Though, some may argue than only open source isn't enough (MIT vs. GPL). And I kinda agree.
@mage_of_dragons well if we're going abolish capitalism, then technology has to be liberated from the system, and open source has greatly helped and contributed to that. We need to do more. There needs to be more effort to liberate technology and turn it against the system. Since weather we like it or not this is the digital age. And any movement and ideology will have to use the technology of the digital age to be relevant
@KinocKayfar I completely agree. Though capitalism can certainly profit off of open source, so copyleft may be the way to go.
@mage_of_dragons what is copy left?
@KinocKayfar Basically the opposite of copyright. For example, it prevents you from using a FOSS project commercially. The Linux project is also under a copyleft license (gplv2), which is why Apple for example couldn't have taken Linux as the base of MacOS.
@mage_of_dragons Makes sense
@KinocKayfar Yeah, and FOSS extremists complain about non-copyleft licenses (e.g. MIT) being too permissive as they do allow you to just repackage and sell the project.
