Due to clashes with gov’t officials about failing to uphold soviet cinema artistic and cultural norms “Sayat Nova" was swiftly censored, re-cut, renamed to “The Color of Pomegranates” and the ultimately banned to the point that even the 1969 documentary about “Paradjanov: The Color of Armenian Land” was also censored and banned.

Due to political reasons (he actively supported Ukrainian independence and he was bisexual) director Sergei Parajanov was imprisoned for 4yrs in a hard labor camp despite outside support for his freedom by artists & intellectuals (including Americans John Updike, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, etc). upon his release the KGB countinued to hound him and periodically detain him. He returned to filmmaking in the late 80s before his passing due to lung cancer in 1990
