In again, another example of corporate enshittification:

Campbell's Soup, which isn't Canadian and is not produced in Canada has put maple leaf symbols on their marketing. SPECIFICALLY to confuse consumers. The maple leaf is not a protected symbol, they just...decided to add it.

Edited for clarity and updated information!

Campbell's did have a factory in Ontario that they closed in 2018, and almost 400 jobs were lost when that happened btw.

@lester The irony is that the large facility in Manitoba closed down in 1989 after over 30 years in production, consolidating to the much larger plant in Toronto.

Spotted this in a shoppers while I was just out too. I'm pretty sure this has been on their cans for a while but it's also garbage.

A can of Campbell's chunky soup with a little label "Designed in Canada"

@lester They do have diferent versions of their packaging out there. Here's a creenshot from amazon.ca of the "prepared in Canada" label:

Attached: 1 image Worth noting there are a few version of Campbell's soup can packaging out there so I took a screenshot of this one for sale on amazon.ca (there's a double whammy for you). Note that the address on this Campbell's soup can is just a last-mile distribution facility. There has been no production at this location since 2018. It is not, in fact. "prepared in Canada". #maplewashing #mapleturfing #BuyCanadian #Canada

@lester Oh, wow, I hope no one's falling for it.

@lester

I was waiting for companies to try and cash in on the #BuyCanadian idea. #Campbell's is now on the #FakeCanadian list.

@LiamEgan Yeah, it's just companies being shitty for profit again, which is expected, but always still somehow disappointing.

@lester

I can’t use it anyway as it has soy protein isolate which causes me IBS.

@lester According to the internet Archive their .ca website has had a maple leaf next to the Campbell's logo since October 2023, but you're right, on the cans it's new. They are headquartered in Camden NJ. They shut down their last Canadian plants in 2018, I believe. They have no actual manufacturing in Canada.
@ianrogers That's right yes, the last factory in Canada was shut down in 2018 and almost 400 people lost their jobs when it happened.
@lester Well, I just wrote to them through the .ca website ... full text in the alt for anyone that wants to do the same ;)
@lester Put a tomato on all the maple syrup you ship to New Jersey then.
'A truly sad day': Campbell shutting down Toronto soup plant, cutting 380 manufacturing jobs | CBC News

The Campbell Soup Company has announced a plan to "wind down" production at its longtime Toronto manufacturing facility. The company says it will open a new Toronto location, but 380 jobs are expected to be lost.

@lester I feel like stores that identify products that are intentionally scamming 🇨🇦like this should just remove all those products from the shelves. Maybe donate them to food banks and soup kitchens.
@lester Time to send complaints about the item/s & store deceptive practise you have personally seen (pics would help) with all pertinent info to https://competition-bureau.canada.ca/en/deceptive-marketing-practices/types-deceptive-marketing-practices/false-or-misleading-representations-and-deceptive-marketing-practices
False or Misleading Representations and Deceptive Marketing Practices

The Competition Act contains provisions addressing false or misleading representations and deceptive marketing practices in promoting the supply or use of a product or any business interest. All representations, in any form whatever, that are false or misleading in a material respect are subject to the Act.

@lester

Yes, its a lie, its an American lying, its too bad. Bye Campbell's see you.

@lester ....how to do a double boycott?? What a shitty thing to do!
@lester Well, that is annoying. Fuck those guys.

@lester
After what they did to their Chilli I suspect that no one wants it anyway.

@lester

love that us corporations have joined the long tradition of americans abroad calling themselves canadian bc they're too embarrassed by their home government
@lester I am an agriculture focused CPA in rural Southern New Jersey near Campbell’s soup headquarters. While I don’t doubt the details of any effort to manipulate consumer beliefs and behavior though marketing, the company is, overall an exceptionally good corporate citizen with a strong history of supporting our same causes and many other redeeming qualities. The outrage expressed here seems disproportionate in the big picture.

@lester there are a variety of versions of campbell's packaging out there.

I've included a screengrab for proof here:
