what is your alternative to Gillete for shaving ? - Lemmy.World

Merkur safety razor, derby extra blades in bulk, shave soap in a mug with a brush.

This. Massively cheaper and a better shave.

Then I just grew a beard and now use neither.

Same, though they still have use if only to trim the neckline. My favourite is a Merkur 39C, used to shave for work and it made quick work of that.

Merkur Shave

Agreed.

I have a Merkur Futur, Astra ‘superior platinum’ blades, and use Proraso shaving soap (it’s the best I’ve tried so far), along with a block of alum as a post-shave treatment. You can get a box of 100 blades for about $10-$20 (any place charging more than $20 is ripping you off), which works out to $.10-.20/blade, and you can reasonably get 3 shaves out of a single blade. A block of shaving soap should last >1 year.

If you really want to get off into the weeds, you can get a really nice straight razor for $200+. But if shaving with a disposable razor is like playing a casual sim game on your phone, and a safety razor is classic Doom on “Hurt Me Plenty” skill level, then a straight razor is like Elden Ring with stick drift, sticky buttons, and a dying battery in your controller.

I don’t know about using Russian Blades in 2025…

The Astra Superior Platinum blades that I buy are made in India. (Not sure if the photo is going to post correctly, we’ll see.) From what I can tell, Gillette stopped manufacturing in Russia, or the importation has stopped with the trade embargoes.

That said, those are the blades that I like. OP can also use Feather, made in Japan, which is supposed to very slightly sharper/more aggressive than Astra Superior Platinum.

No they are still active in Russia
