I’ve become almost used to being shocked and ashamed for my country, but Trump’s disgusting treatment of Zelensky today was simply beyond belief.

I cry for Ukraine, and for us, too.

It was like watching whatever remained of our country’s stature on the world stage self-immolate before our eyes.

I think it's critical not just to condemn Trump's and Vance's disgraceful treatment of Zelensky in the Oval Office, but also to reject the administration's implicit framing of US assistance as being about getting the "best deal" for us.

Aid to Ukraine is not a business deal. It is about bolstering the defenses of an ally facing an existential threat and about containing an aggressive menace to international peace.

@mattblaze to trump, everything’s a deal.
@holdenweb @mattblaze everything is a deal, but here he's not dealing for America, he's dealing for a win, and the satisfaction of oneupmanship.
@mattblaze we are in fact getting an incredible deal by Ukraine fighting this battle for us!
@mattblaze the ironic thing is that supporting Ukraine was seen as an absolute financial steal for America: a small % spent of the Defense budget, no American lives risked, massive damage to one of their main global enemies.

@mattblaze As Land Lease was not a search for the best deal, nor Marshall.

But the Nazis have taken over the White House now. We can only pray that the treason in public display yesterday serves as a wake up call to the people of America.

@mattblaze as long as trump does not acknowledge Russia as the aggressor there will not be a deal that is favorable for Ukraine but only for trump and russia.
@mattblaze I don't think you can reject this framing; Americans voted for a candidate who promised to run the government like a business. This is what a business would do.
