I bet if anybody knows how to get old Encarta CD-ROM encyclopedias running on Linux it'd be Fedi
@ifixcoinops Wow mate that's not even a little bit of chum in the water.
@ifixcoinops I'm pretty sure I still have that CD-ROM in one of my drawers, but with my trusty hardcopy Penguin Concise Encyclopedia on hand I haven't had cause to revisit the program.
@ifixcoinops I'd probably do it with a VM running Windows 3.11 and an Encarta disk made into an ISO
@Drquuxum @ifixcoinops Win 95 probably better for that era

@ifixcoinops haha I was doing this recently and I cant even remember if I succeeded or got distracted by something else 🫠

If someone can throw in Microsoft Bob too then that’s my midlife crises escape to my childhood comforts sorted.

WineHQ - Encarta 98

Open Source Software for running Windows applications on other operating systems.

@ifixcoinops
My first stab at getting it running would be #DosBox if it's the one as old as the one I have pictured in my head.
@DopeGhoti @ifixcoinops
Yeah, my first Encarta experience was on a Win 3.11 machine. The CD went into a caddy, then into the drive slot.

@silvermoon82 @ifixcoinops
Oh my; I'd forgotten about CD caddies.. back before CD-ROM drives had a speed rating in multiples of 150Kb/sec.

And that's connecting directly now to memories of the few times I saw 60X? 50X? drive exceed the structural integrity of the disc it was spinning. Those were fun times.

@ifixcoinops somewhere, deep in the basement troves, there is a copy of Encarta 95 on CD-ROM.

I am sure it would run under WINE, it's Win3.1 era, but prob I would just rip to ISO and boot it in a Win95 VM. Just for the 'cutting edge' feel of the era.

@ifixcoinops easiest way is to run Windows 9x in DOSBox. IIRC you can just mount a Windows 9x CD in DOSBox and install it. It doesn't seem like this should work but it does. It's been a while since I've done this though, so there might be some rough edges I'm not remembering. If you need help I'm happy to help you figure it out.
@ifixcoinops (I'm assuming you mean 90s era Encarta here, if you mean 2000s era Encarta I have no idea)
@ifixcoinops last time I tried I failed miserably, I just wanted to play MindMaze again :(
