Devastated to learn about the passing of @pilky last night, at home, surrounded by family, after a short, unexpected battle with cancer. He was a talented developer, designer, miniature painter and accessibility champion, and one of my closest friends for the past sixteen years. He provided the inspiration and design help I needed when bringing my apps to the Mac, and no social media post will ever convey how much he will be missed
You might have known @pilky for his apps, like Coppice (whose development was streamed on Twitch), or his wealth of knowledge on AppKit & Xcode, or the infamous fixradarorgtfo petition that sparked intense internal debate at Apple and drove a ton of changes to Apple's bug reporting (https://thenextweb.com/news/app-developers-frustrated-with-bug-reporting-tools-call-on-apple-to-fix-radar-or-gtfo). I knew him too, for his mini painting and #warhammer hobby, which we shared. He spurred me on to paint more and improve my skills, to build better, more-accessible apps, and so much more
Frustrated Apple Developers Ask Apple to 'Fix Radar or GTFO'

If you’re an iOS or Mac developer, then you’ve probably had an encounter with Apple’s bug reporting tool called Radar. Although complaints have been voiced about Radar for years, there is now an online petition being passed around that asks

@stroughtonsmith @pilky wtf? Hadn’t gamed with him since last year and had no idea. He bought a game for me a month ago. Gutted
@stroughtonsmith @pilky Please accept my condolences. RIP @pilky
@stroughtonsmith Sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine losing a friend like that, so early and sudden. I’d
read some of his posts over the past year and was really struck by his thoughtfulness and efforts to find and live at peace while acknowledging what was to come

@stroughtonsmith So sorry for your loss.

The thing that sucks now is that you’re constantly reminded of those talents. But eventually you’ll find that they bring back joyful memories.

@stroughtonsmith @pilky so sorry to hear. I didn’t know him personally, but he was an active member in a forum I used to run a long time ago (probably 20+ years at this point). Always a super nice guy!
@stroughtonsmith @pilky so so so sorry for you loss Steve, condolences and may he rest in peace ❤️

@stroughtonsmith @pilky OMG. My condolences to his family and loved ones.

The knowledge and humour he (and a few other UK devs) shared back in the day got me motivated to start IOS development.

@stroughtonsmith I’m so sorry. May his memory be carried as a blessing for you, his friends, family, and those he connected with.
@stroughtonsmith @pilky Can’t believe this, I had no idea. Don’t even know what to say ❤️
@stroughtonsmith really sorry for your loss Steve
@stroughtonsmith @pilky That's horrible. He was a really nice guy.
@stroughtonsmith @pilky I don’t think I ever interacted with him directly, but he’s one of the guys who have been on my rss and social feeds ever since I started coding, one of the voices I deferred to. My condlences.

@stroughtonsmith @pilky my condolences Steven 💜

He really was a wonderful person

@stroughtonsmith @pilky So sad, been following him for years. Awful.
