systemd is an init system and just has not played the same role in the development of GNU/Linux distributions like GNU has. before systemd there was no sysvinit, and there are number of alternate init systems. It’s not about system functionality that we name operating systems.

Fellow student told me about it, I was already curious but hadn’t yet tried any distros yet; they burned me a disk and brought it to class the next day. Was really cool to run a different OS, and to just pop it in and go.
