Tumblr to join the fediverse after WordPress migration completes | TechCrunch

Since 2022, blogging site Tumblr has been teasing its plans to integrate with the fediverse -- the open social web powered by the protocol ActivityPub

@Sarahp Filing this solidly in the "I'll Believe It When I See It" column, but shifting Tumblr to the fediverse certainly feels like a revival of the open web of the mid 2000s. I hope that social can become more free over time.

@thegdthadman @Sarahp What makes this plausible to me is that it sounds like Automattic are basically killing off Tumblr as a separate product with its own code base.

Instead, it's morphing into basically WordPress with a different UI.

They're unlikely to say it outright in those terms.

But if you run a Tumblr blog, then it's being ported over to WordPress, and each Tumblr post will be a WordPress post under the hood.

And if Tumblr is becoming basically a consumer-focused WP with a different front end, and it'll be compatible with WP plugins, then no reason the existing Fedi plugins shouldn't work.

@Sarahp
On one hand, Tumblr's userbase has a similar anti-corporate mindset as Fedi's, while also commonly discussing media that isn't talked about much on Fedi, complimenting it well. There are people on there who are not on Fedi that I'd like to follow.

On the other hand, it's owned by Automattic, and the moderation has been very bad, not properly stopping bots while being more likely to ban people for being trans than being transphobic.
