On barring AP from the White House media pool for not using "Gulf of America," press secretary Karoline Leavitt says such lies won't be tolerated and "it's very important for this administration that we get that right."
Encyclopædia Britannica announces it'll continue to use ‘Gulf of Mexico’ as it serves an international audience, the Gulf is an international body of water and the US authority to rename it "is ambiguous." (Also posts its 1st Ed. map from 1768.)

@w7voa Mexico, Cuba, and the US each border the Gulf (see official US map https://apps.nationalmap.gov/viewer/), which was first named the Gulf of Mexico in the 16th century. The US controls more than 1,600 miles of the Gulf’s coastline—a little less than half of the total—and its sovereign territory extends 12 nautical miles beyond the coast. The country possesses economic rights over a further 200 miles offshore.

Apple's and Google's adoption of the change were not legally required, as the president's order only applies to federal agencies.
