I’m so happy when creators and artists and programmers mention their influences and sources of inspiration. Being able to trace the flows of ideas is so exciting and useful when creating new things.

One example I stumbled on today is @ribose’s clay page: https://ribo.zone/clay/ – if you scroll to the bottom there’s links to all the creators that inspired them. Don’t forget to look at all the cute animations!

@brendan @ribose in that case I would be remiss if I did not mention http://www.jerrysmap.com/
Jerry's Map

Jerry's Map, by artist Jerry Gretzinger, is a map of a fictional world 50 years in the making.

@jcreed @ribose Oh cool! You mean that inspired https://mastodon.social/@jcreed/113981754007534979 ? I think I remember seeing Jerry’s Map a long time ago, glad to see it again! :)

@brendan @ribose yeah I mean it's been a constant nugget of inspiration ever since I saw it, also a long time ago --- not that I *needed* it per se, I have enjoyed fictional maps before and since, but it's just so delightful

anyway totally agree that it's fun to hear other people's influences!

@brendan @ribose it's not merely cases of "oh! this person made me realize such a thing was possible" or "oh man I want to do *that* now" but also "I love this thing that is in the same space as things I want to make and I want other people to be happy discovering it also"

@jcreed @ribose That’s super cool. I’s really nice when you discover others out there doing similar stuff that interests you.

I have distant memories of vainly searching for library books about fantasy map making and coming up empty... then finding obscure geocities pages about this stuff :)
