Tomorrow we are watching "Cells at Work!" ("γ―γŸγ‚‰γη΄°θƒž", /Hataraku Saibō/). It looks absolutely ridiculous. πŸ₯°

Basically a live-action martial arts version of half of "Once Upon a Time ... Life", was what I first thought when I saw the trailer. But it's a pretty large franchise with a manga, anime, light novels and now this live-action rendition.

Ok, this movie had no business being as good as it was.

The only way to make a live action adaptation of something as camp as anthropomorphized blood cells is to take it 100% seriously and commit, and they did.

Absolutely not something everyone can enjoy. It is very on the nose, it is full of every anime trope it is. But if you can enjoy seeing that kind of thing delivered to perfection, this movie is for you!

The overacting is on point, the live-action actors do anime-level voice work, and the fight-scene storytelling goes hard. Props and stages are brilliant, CGI and practical effects are seamless.

The human-world story goes full spectrum cute, hilarious, juvenile, deadly serious, heartbreaking and touching, as short as it is when competing with the cellular-level story.

I went in expecting to have a bit of fun and a laugh, but this was so good it was good. Educational and biologically accurate too! The analogies work really well. I learned about cytotoxic lymphocytes!

It's never going to happen, but my dream Hollywood remake would have the DV Dune cast doing this. They're a perfect fit.
