Google is now officially a fascist tool, as its contemptible "Gulf of America" change shows -- and as removing progressive events from the calendar shows.

You MUST expect now that Google will gladly hand over your most personal information to the Trump regime or anyone the regime likes.

You never could trust Google, once it became an advertising company. You must now assume it is your likely enemy.

@dangillmor it has been an enemy for decades

@primalmotion @dangillmor

The gift of trump is making people realize terrible things that have always existed, that people pretend are new.

@dangillmor - here's some possible ways on how to avoid using their services:
Chrome - Firefox / LibreWolf / Floorp
Google Drive - NextCloud
Google search - DuckDuckGo / Mojeek
Gmail - Tutanota
Google Maps - Open Street Map / Magic Earth / OSMand+ / OrganicMaps
Google Docs - LibreOffice / OnlyOffice
Google Calendar - Etar / Thunderbird / Gnome Calendar
YouTube - PeerTube, Nebula, Vimeo
@TotalSonic @dangillmor Android? Is there a *viable* and *usable by humans* non-corporate phone option?
@davidr @dangillmor - for Android alternatives other than iPhone look at:
Furilabs - https://furilabs.com/
Sailfish / Jolla - https://sailfishos.org/
as your current best bets (especially if you are in USA and need VoLTE to make calls).
FuriPhone FLX1s Linux Phone

@davidr @dangillmor - but if you just want to "de-google" your existing Android phone so it is free of Google Play Services that send your data to them - try out:
Calyx - https://calyxos.org/
Graphene - https://grapheneos.org/
/e/ - https://e.foundation/e-os/
iode - https://iode.tech/iodeos/
crDroid - https://crdroid.net
Lineage - https://lineageos.org/
CalyxOS

@davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor graphene. But you'll need a pixel phone to run it.
@Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - which goes completely counter to the goal of not giving any money to Google, and why I get annoyed at the Graphene-evangelists, who don't understand that some people might have other priorities than just privacy & security hardening to a paranoid level (which Graphene does very well) Fwiw, I use crDroid flashed to my phone, & with the TrackerControl app & a curated list of foss apps, gives me a great ad-free and smooth experience that has minimal tracking done.
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor
For what it's worth, I bought an excellent condition pixel on Swappa and while helping the resale value of their phones isn't exactly ideal, I'm running Graphene without personally handing Google a dime.
@TheGreatLlama @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - that is all great by me - to be clear if best possible hardened security & privacy are your biggest priorities then I agree that a recent Pixel plus Graphene OS is the best choice. But if someone has other priorities, such as *using the device they already own*, or having a device with better battery life, microSD expansion, headphone jack, then there are other options that can provide this too, while still giving them more control over their data

@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor
Fair, though for my part, I have come up with answers for most of those.

Battery life goes way up once one has dispensed with all the spyware. I have occasionally forgotten to charge my pixel and managed a whole second day on a charge. My old OnePlus running Lineage was similar.

There really aren't many manufacturers still supporting microSD, and I resigned myself to just buying the version with extra storage for my huge music library.

The headphone jack only hurts until you buy a set of bluetooth earbuds and wonder how you tolerated cords for so long.

I've run other things on other phones and honestly, once you learn the ins and outs, Graphene is a better experience. It's not *just* about the hyper-security. Just my honest review.

@TheGreatLlama @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - regarding headphones: I'm an audio engineer with a severe level of snobbery as that stuff goes - blue tooth degrades audio quality immediately relative to what you get from a wired connection - although once again, that is not most other people's priorities.
@TheGreatLlama @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - then of course folks can just use dongles too - but I tend to lose or forget small extra bits like that, and not end up having them when I need them
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor
Yeah... Hard pass on packing around extra stuff. I manage to consistently hold onto my keys, my wallet and my phone. Beyond that, we're hitting risky territory!

@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor
I **was** an audio snob, so I respect that. An accident with an eardrum sort of lowered my standards a bit and it seems my good ear has chosen to degrade itself somewhat to match over the years. Life πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I still demand better from my home equipment, but where my phone would be the source (car, out walking, etc), I'm more flexible these days.

@TheGreatLlama @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - as far as battery life, other devices have bigger batteries than Pixels, and again, can have the spyware stripped out - so end up with even longer life than them. Point once again being: Graphene is great, but it is NOT the only way, and some folks have different priorities than the Graphene evangelists do, for which some of the other options might work better for them. Each to their own, and whatever works is all good by me.
@Haikyoneko @davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor well that's a bummer! I've been wanting to de-Google my phone for a while now but I'm sure as hell not gonna pay Google a thousand dollars for the privilege πŸ˜…
@raphaelmorgan @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - what phone do you have? You might be able to flash Lineage or crDroid to it (as well as some other options)
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor OnePlus Nord N20
It's been a while since I looked, but I remember last time I looked at all the options I could find and none of them supported my phone πŸ˜… I think this whole pursuit is kind of aimed at middle class individuals, so there are a lot of Big Brand Name Expensive phones on there that I would never buy even if I could
But when this one breaks I'm thinking of trying to get a phone that ships with non-Google Android
@TotalSonic @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor thanks, I'll check it out!
@raphaelmorgan @Haikyoneko @davidr @dangillmor - just be careful doing this, as one can potentially brick your phone if you make a mistake while flashing the rom (and doing so usually ends your warranty too, if you have one).
@raphaelmorgan @TotalSonic @davidr @dangillmor the 2nd hand market is an option for cheaper pixel without giving Google money. I think the pixel 8 has 7 years of software support too.
@Haikyoneko @raphaelmorgan @davidr @dangillmor - yes, but then you are helping to prop up the second hand value of Pixels, which motivates others to purchase more new Pixels, undermining the goal of boycott of Google. But yes, if the best possible security hardening is what you want then Graphene + recent Pixel is the best choice

@TotalSonic @raphaelmorgan @davidr @dangillmor I mean, if you buy any android phone, new or second hand, that runs stock Google android you're helping prop up Google's main business which is search/advertising. They hardly make any (or maybe no) profit on hardware. It's not their core business, but more of a loss leader.

In a perfect world there'd be a framework phone that runs de-googled android out of the box, but that doesn't exist. So you have to compromise somewhere.

@Haikyoneko @raphaelmorgan @davidr @dangillmor - true that. Which is why endeavors like Ubuntu Touch, Droidian, Mobian, Postmarket OS, on the software side, and Volla, Shift, Pine64, Fairphone, and Furilabs on the hardware side are so important to foster as well.
@Haikyoneko @raphaelmorgan @davidr @dangillmor - actually what you describes kind of exists - Volla sells rebranded Gigaset (German assembled) phones that are AOSP (or Ubuntu Touch) straight out of the box. https://volla.online/en/index.html

@davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor

GrapheneOS is what you want. They are here in Fedi too!

@davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor
I own a Fairphone 4 and that's available as a non-google version.

Unfortunately mine isn't google-free but most apps can be replaced.

@davidr @TotalSonic @dangillmor GrapheneOS seems to be a somewhat usable option for a "half" degoogled phone (minimized data for Google, in trade for using only what you absolutely need out of the Google universe).

And it's probably even installable as a CustomROM on Pixels by non-geeks, using the Web installer.

@TotalSonic but be aware that even if you don't use Google for your mails, there's a good chance they'll get them anyway, as they might as well handle the mails of your contacts
@dangillmor
@punissuer @dangillmor - it is likely lots of our internet traffic will get routinely routed through their servers as well. They are majorly hard to avoid unless you are totally off grid. Still - it IS possible to avoid using them for things they monetize if one is mindful of this stuff
@TotalSonic @dangillmor what's wrong with rumble?
@mmmelton @dangillmor - lol, Rumble helps platform fascists, so was not on my short list at all.
@TotalSonic @dangillmor did you know Firefox let's you visit Rumble?
@mmmelton @dangillmor - of course it does. And to be clear I have no problem with Rumble existing, I just would not recommend that service to others myself.
@TotalSonic @dangillmor because of the fascist platforming
@TotalSonic @dangillmor to add to this: Immich is a good self-hosted Google Photos alternative
@tj @dangillmor - oh yeah, good add there! I just use NextCloud for that, but for extra features Immich is great, with Ente, Cryptee, LibrePhotos and Photo Prism being some other good alternatives too.
@TotalSonic @dangillmor YouTube is the one Google service I can’t escape, every other service has been replaced by other options for nearly two decades on my end. Peertube and Nebula are great but have drastically less content available.
@ChristinWhite @dangillmor - yes, pretty much the same for me here as well, although I have been making some efforts to move more of my video viewing to PeerTube (which has also been getting better in my experiences lately). At least if one is going to watch YouTube on a mobile device you can use apps like NewPipe or Tubular or Invidious which block ads and anonymize your views to a good extent.
@TotalSonic @dangillmor yeah, I have all of two channels I’m subscribed to that I’ve found and switched my subscription to PeerTube for, both Linux related. It’s an uphill battle but I’m hoping someday.
@TotalSonic @dangillmor and how about Android cellphones? Therefor you need a google account

@TotalSonic @dangillmor
I've changed these up to now:

Chrome -> Vivaldi and Opera
Google drive -> Dropbox (and soon Nextcloud)
Google search -> Duck
Gmail (don't really use that anyway) -> mail.de, posteo.de
maps -> maps.me
docs -> never used those anyway as I use libreOffice
youTube -> freeTube

Need to look into how I can move my calendar and also get google off my android.

@ruedi @dangillmor - yeah, I didn't mention Chromium based browsers like Vivaldi &Opera, since the Chromium project, while open source, is also primarily directed and funded by Google. If one was going to choose a Chromium based browser other than Chrome, I would likely go to Brave, as it is open source and has excellent ad and tracker blocking built into it, where as Vivaldi and Opera both have some closed source elements. Opera is owned by a Chinese corporation that is known to do data mining
@ruedi @dangillmor - But Vivaldi is definitely a better browser choice than Chrome. The other options you mention are all good alternatives to me as well.

@TotalSonic @dangillmor
One of my main problems is that I do advertising on google for my business. And to analise my ads I use google analytics.

If there is an alternative I would be happy to try it.
