regret to inform you that acab includes kernel maintainers
since this is leaving my intended circle fast I feel like I have to clarify:
- this post is meant to be more tragically funny than enraging
- the point is that favourably comparing yourself to cops is an unintentionally scathing critique of linux kernel maintainers
- this is obviously not the full context. the email is otherwise tame
- please do not brigade the thread (again)
@nota big yikes and turbo cringe
@nota the Rust for Linux scandal has proven this already
@nota NGL, it sounds bad, but it is very much too out of context for me to be willing to draw any conclusions yet. Does someone have a link with said context?
@Fiona I didn't want to cause further brigading of the lkml thread but context is someone complaining about all-powerful maintainers. Theo replied, saying their only power was that of veto, completely missing the point while favourably complaining themselves to the thin blue line. Message is pretty tame apart from that bit of unintentionally scathing criticism. Feel free to search it up yourself though.

@Fiona @nota https://lkml.org/lkml/2025/2/8/494

and it is really out of context and actually a lamentation of the fact that maintainers frequently are "Cassandras" that can only sit by and watch while people do incredibly silly things. As a maintainer (not Linux kernel) I immediately know what Ted is referring to.

Honestly, reading more than the first 3 lines of that mail dispels any doubt about this somehow being a police power thing.

And I gotta say, not linking the source here is pretty sus.

LKML: "Theodore Ts'o": Re: On community influencing (was Re: [PATCH v8 2/2] rust: add dma coherent allocator abstraction.)

@nota lol and of course it's Ted Ts'o saying that, what a surprise

@nota not all-powerfui, but all-powerpfui¹

(¹: "pfui" - german for "yuck")
