Suggestions for books about mages? - Divisions by zero

Hi! I’m looking for books about mages, wizards and witches in which the magic itself is a central part of the story and not just there so the MC can slam a fireball into the face of his foes. Maybe the magic has a will of its own or the MC is trying to ‘restore’ it from some kind of ‘disease’ or something else.
