"I'm transgender and a US citizen. Do I need to worry about my passport?"

* If you already have a passport, and it doesn't need renewal soon: Do nothing. Currently you are fine.

* If you don't have a passport, and have no immediate plans to leave the US: Consider doing nothing.

* If you've NEVER applied for a passport:

* If you mailed in a renewal/application in the last month and haven't heard back yet:

Now things get complicated/upsetting.

@mcc I just want to clarify, the first point may not apply if you already have a passport *with an X gender marker on it*. Several US equality groups (most recent I saw was NJ's Garden State Equality) have been telling people with X passports not to travel at all.

@mcc My passport has an X and I was basically told I'm SOL if I want to reenter the USA :/ I'm being approved for an NZ passport but that also may cause me trouble because some US citizens get turned away if they try to enter the States on a non-US passport.

Generally dual citizens are required to enter each of those two countries on the passport of that country, that's not US-specific

@sabik @lucky The US has weird stuff going with dual citizens. It technically does not recognize dual citizenship as even existing

@mcc @sabik Yeah, I even had the thought of renouncing US citizenship (which would unfortunately also save me money overall due to how filing taxes overseas works) but, unsurprisingly, I've also heard you're likely to get turned away as a visitor after renouncing >_<
