When I moved here from Twitter it was with a resolution to as much as possible post about things that make me happy rather than things that make me angry. That resolution has only become more important to maintaining my mental health as the things that make me angry, not to mention goddamn terrified, have accelerated. I hope it isn’t mistaken for a lack of interest, or worse, an endorsement of the things that are going on now.
Podcast #1,051: Man's Search for Meaning, With Viktor Frankl's Grandson

I first read Man’s Search for Meaning by the neurologist, psychologist, and philosopher Viktor Frankl in high school, and I have re-read it several times since. It’s one of the books that’s had the biggest impact on my life, so it was a real treat to speak with Alexander Vesely, Frankl’s grandson, about his grandfather’s […]

@overholt Yup. Twitter during the longest 4 years (so far) was basically torture. BlueSky picked up where Twitter left off, so I'm mostly here. This is where the sane people are, and we are busily keeping ourselves sane by being here. Hang in there.

@rjblaskiewicz @overholt

Agree. I refused to open a BS account. Told everyone I'm done. It's FB for coalitions, but Mastodon for everything else.

@DrSurferChic @overholt

I got an early invite and gave it a try. But it's always a pressure cooker over there. I'm gonna focus on my two issues, education and antiracism. I'm gearing up to write my book (about American medical charlatans of yesteryear), which will occupy time I'd otherwise spend doom scrolling. I'm no use as a nervous wreck.

@overholt I hear you John. I try to 'love my neighbor' and 'love my enemy' and it's hard. Much easier for me to post snarky, snide, and sarcastic things about some people and events. But I also don't feel good about doing the easier thing when I do that.

I do enjoy reading your posts about cool rare books stuff, too. An island of normalcy for me. Thanks for posting things that make you happy, as many of them make me happy as well.

@overholt I do the same as well. Many people like myself appreciate the distraction and the hope
@overholt I had some thoughts about this this weekend: https://beige.party/@maxleibman/113930836037620820
Max Leibman (@[email protected])

There is a world of difference between pretending that everything is normal and relishing the few things that still are. When I see someone just going about their business, whether here or offline, unless I specifically know better I give them the grace to assume they know what’s going on, and leave them in peace.

@overholt No, I feel the same. I also want my feed to be a respite for people who already have enough to deal with, a place they are accepted and welcome and can be at peace for a bit.
@overholt 100% understand, agree and have the same philosophy here.
@overholt The world is changed, in every little thing. I can certainly use more joy from people swimming in my social stream.
@overholt it is not. At least not by me.
@overholt It is not. Every nice and interesting thing is much appreciated. Even more so right now - while following events aghast from abroad, it is lovely to see loveliness (the historical items of interest, the special collection items, etc) from the US.
@overholt Definitely not mistaken as lack of interest or an endorsement!
@overholt I should adopt your resolution.
