Newsletter writers who use Substack should ask themselves whether they're comfortable supporting a platform where management thinks what Musk and Zuckerberg are doing is just fine.

Example (from CEO): "[Musk] deserves a lot of credit for advancing freedom of speech on X, before it was popular" --

If you know someone using Substack, suggest they find a better place to write.

@dangillmor

substack is the nazi bar

@samiamsam @dangillmor I recently discovered Substack and liked it so much because it was so antinazi… I am so bummed
@dangillmor Do you have particular alternatives in mind?
@sarah_geri @dangillmor A good alternative is ghost.org, which you could also host yourself as it is open source just like WordPress. Here is a good comparison (in german though) https://lsww.de/substack/

@sarah_geri ghost, beehiv, buttondown, wordpress, medium, etc
@dangillmor @sarah_geri hadn't played with Buttondown yet; thanks for the recc

@dangillmor This toot got me to delete my substack account finally. The one thing that had been holding me back was David Farrier's webworm. But while he has talked about his concerns about his friend, who is the founder of Substack- he hasn't done anything about it.

Anyway, thanks for the prompt. I should have done this a while ago.

@dangillmor apparently “freedom of speech” means not punching Nazi’s…with words of course. @teachermemes
@dangillmor That’s exactly why I stopped using it. All those businesses supporting Trump & friends war on decency need to be abandoned…
@dangillmor Who's going to tell Paul Krugman?

@dangillmor According to the publisher of The 1440 at the LION conference last fall, the platform he'd recommend is Beehiiv https://www.beehiiv.com/

And yes, Substack is not conducive to independent creators, unless you like a slice of your hard-earneds being funneled to some of the worst people imaginable
