Remember, the Holocaust didn’t start with gas chambers in Auschwitz.

It started with politicians dividing the people with “us vs. them”.

It started with intolerance and hate speech.

It started when people stopped caring, became desensitized, and turned a blind eye.

Remember.

@Strandjunker It also started with an atempt to deport people to Madagascar.
@johnrohde Given that plan didn't gain traction until 1937 and was abandoned in 1940, the Holocaust didn't start there, either. @Strandjunker

@Strandjunker
I guess it's time to build a successful resistance model against it that future generations can use as an example..
@Strandjunker Lets also remember Hitler didn't win his second term either but he switched his wording and then got re-elected. If history repeats itself then what did we learn the first time?
@Strandjunker

Like many Germans Niemöller was initially a convinced Nazi. Later he got locked up in a concentration camp himself as the Nazi regime got increasingly paranoid and turned on their own supporters for even the slightest signs of criticism. After WWII he spoke out to prevent fascists to ever again gain a foothold in German politics ... On the 80th anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation it is especially important to remember those, who had the chance to prevent fascism, but didn't.
@Strandjunker
I wonder if they will take over the businesses of gay people, like the Nazis gave Jewish businesses to supporters.
Also, I hope an updated version of this will appear: https://www.leelawusa.com/blog/2024/10/what-happens-to-my-assets-if-i-get-deported/

@Strandjunker I'm one to lean toward the Holocaust starting with "On the Jew and his Lies" by Martin Luther, the founder of Lutheranism.

Have a read. Wonderful work from a very loving devotee of God willing to stand against power for what's right and true. You'll find a recipe in there. Steps that should be taken to make the world a better, more Godly, and more loving place.

I guess it's contested, but it seems pretty obvious to me that the Nazis knew this work and followed it.

Religion.

@crazyeddie @Strandjunker Even before that; the Roman Empire's efforts (sacking Jerusalem, etc.) in the Levant led to the Jewish diaspora.
@c_merriweather @Strandjunker Jewish people have been picked on since the height of their civilization at the beginning of time. The concept of blood libel long predates Luther. But have a read at that book if you can stand it. It's at least short, but it is pure, distilled hatred and he ends with a prescription that is basically exactly what the Nazis did.

@Strandjunker It started when people were desperate and turned to someone who went after the easy targets, the same targets that had been targeted for two millennia.

It kept going when Jews thought, "Oh, it won't happen here."

Thought, "They're my neighbor! I work with them, I grew up playing with them!"

Thought, "I served in the army! I contribute to society, I have nothing they could go after me for!"

Thought, "My neighbors won't kill me the first chance they get! We're modern!"

@Strandjunker yes, and dehumanising targeted minorities.

@Strandjunker

This is the lesson our children must be taught - they may not hear about the holocaust but they must understand that it always starts with the demonisation of a group of people whom politicians seize upon to hide their own failings #holocaust #fascism #ReformParty

@Strandjunker like Amerikkka is doing since 10/7
@allynkhine @Strandjunker please cure your anal cranial impaction and realize who started that war. And, stop trying to hijack the conversation and take it in a different direction than it’s going.
@Blueteamsherpa @Strandjunker it clearly started in 1948. But whatever. Netanyahu started this one after sending money and arms! He knew of their plans a year before. The guy is a genocidal maniac!
@Strandjunker well that's an interesting way of putting it this currently happens in Australia.

@Strandjunker

The orange fascist #Trump gives me a deja-vu 😬

@Strandjunker I never read Hannah Arendt's book on totalitarianism and the banality of evil. Seems relevant. I also have a book by Horkheimer and Adorno, I think, called Dialectic of the Enlightenment... haven't started it.

There is a clear continuation between colonialism and concentration camps for indigenous people. Like the atrocities in the Congo Free State, like the atlantic slave trade...

I agree as to where it did not begin. Not sure about the rest.

@Strandjunker Very well said, anyone who doesn't see the danger should visit the camps and read the history of what led to them to understand the gravity of it all

@Strandjunker

Remember indeed, because that is how fascism works…

@Strandjunker this makes me feel terrified and helpless at the same time. What can we do? The politicians won’t listen to us.

@Strandjunker

The Holocaust wasn't *only* about Jews, nor were they the only, or even the most numerous, victims. The first to actually die were disabled people, but the Holocaust itself started with the burning of books.

"One of the institutions ransacked by the Nazi student groups that organized the book burnings was the Institute for Sexual Research (Institut für Sexualwissenschaft). Founded by the pioneering sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, the institute was the first medical center devoted to the study of gender and sexuality. At the institute, trans patients received gender-affirming care, activists campaigned for the rights of queer Germans and doctors conducted research on gender-affirming procedures — much of which was lost forever in the book burnings."

It was a pioneering trans library — until the Nazis burned it

In Weimar Germany, the gay Jewish doctor Magnus Hirschfeld performed the first gender-affirming surgeries and collected research on sexuality. The 1933 book burnings destroyed his life's work
