Will young developers take on key open source software?

The founders of important open source software are getting older, who will take over?

@bagder C was one of the compelling factors when I took up systemd maintenance as a senior high student in 2023 ;-)
@bagder I like how they used the most JPEG'd photo of you possible lol
@tj it looks almost like they try to blur the logos on my laptop there! 😀
@bagder
You... haven't changed much
@levitte yeah, I like how they make it sound as if that image was from 1996 and not 2021...
@bagder
These are words of both concern and hope. The sustainability of any FOSS project is not due. It is a daily gift.

@bagder I didn’t think about this much back then, but ever since I switched to Linux, I’ve been thinking about this more and more. Hope this won’t become an issue for open source, given how pretty much everything depends on it.

Unrelated a little, but it reminded me how a few years ago the IRS had to call up retirement homes to get COBOL programmers to fix some issues that nobody else could.

@WinNT4 I believe this is one of those dormant lingering problems we have not really faced much yet but it risks become real going forward as the average age of contributors to these projects grow almost as fast as time...
@bagder Let's just hope they don't ask an LLM to rewrite it in JavaScript.
@bagder Mmm... does it have to be young people? I was assuming this could be an interesting thing to do during retirement.
@ives everyone is of course always welcome. I hope I will still play with curl into my retirement myself.
@bagder you're not even wearing your one (1) suit.
