This week I learned that something I thought was well known isn't as well known as I thought, so here's a mini thread re:

Filing Complaints About Law Enforcement

(with #SanDiego specifics but the general idea may apply to your community too)

If you have an encounter with a deputy from the #SanDiego Sheriff’s Office and feel that deputy engaged in misconduct, you can file a complaint with the County of San Diego Citizen’s Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB)

CLERB investigates complaints about the Sheriff’s Office only, but many cities in San Diego County contract with SDSO for law enforcement (#Poway for instance) and this falls under CLERB jurisdiction, too

If you have an encounter with an officer from the #SanDiego Police Department and feel that officer engaged in misconduct, you can file a complaint with the City of San Diego Commission on Police Practices (CPP)

File a Complaint | City of San Diego Official Website

The Commission on Police Practices (CPP) encourages any person(s) who believe that they have experienced or observed police misconduct to file a complaint with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and/or with the CPP. The CPP recognizes that completing and submitting the Complaint Form may be intimidating and stressful. The CPP wishes to assure complainants and witnesses that they will be able to do so without fear of retaliation or adverse consequences. In order to investigate the incident completely, it is helpful to provide your name and information.

While I am most familiar with CLERB and the CPP, many other cities and counties have similar local government / citizen oversight boards that investigate complaints

Often these boards and commissions hold regular meetings with time set aside for public comment and you can request to speak before them about your experience as well

And since I have your attention -- if you are a #SanDiego County resident interested in joining a community organization that speaks regularly at CLERB meetings about holding the Sheriff accountable for jail deaths, DM me and I’ll put you in touch with several groups doing that work
