Nice to see some @pixelfed coverage on CNET. Not only that, the article provides step-by-step instructions on how to export everything from Instagram and import it into Pixelfed. 👏

Fed Up With Instagram? How to Move Your Photos to Pixelfed

You can keep your Instagram posts and host them somewhere other than Meta.

CNET

@jon @pixelfed

Important point included in the article -- the emails they send with a "download" button do not work (at least not for me and the cnet author).

I'm trying the steps he found did work (return to the web page and he saw a download button -- I'm still waiting for it to show up).

@jon @pixelfed Update:

-Going back to the webpage this morning gave me a download button!
-Some images are in webp format which it looks like Flickr accepts but pixelfed.media does not (not sure if all the webp images also have jpg versions included?).
-There's no metadata preserved or, at least, the image files all have today as a create date. I assume you can get it from one of the json post files (?)

Lucky for me I didn't post all that much!

Also just highlight again (it's mentioned in the article) that pixelfed.social turned off JSON import because they're getting slammed by new users. So I can't try doing things that way, hence the poking around.

@maj @pixelfed

I'm mentioning @jeffcarlson in this reply so he can hopefully see your previous post about the issue you found in his Pixelfed article.

@jon @pixelfed @jeffcarlson

Just to clarify: HE confirmed there was an issue with the email getting sent out by meta (I thought maybe it was just me) and suggested an alternative, which worked!

So thanks, Jeff!

@maj @pixelfed @jeffcarlson

Ahh, sorry. I was moving too fast and misunderstood.

@jon @maj @pixelfed Yeah I thought I was going crazy because that email wasn’t working. Then realized it was easier to just go back to the source for that download button.

Thanks for the boosts!

@jeffcarlson @jon @pixelfed Clicking a button that is not a button is weirdly disorientating.

I tried 3 times with different configurations (e.g. limiting the info by type/date, etc.) with no luck. It did take overnight before the button showed up back on the page, but then it did!

But now all my Caturday, Food, and Selfies from stories are safely on Flickr:

Instagram Export Jan 2025

No create date or other metadata so these all show up as being 01/22/25

Flickr

@maj @jon @pixelfed

I tried to export my images in December and Meta never provided me with an email despite making multiple requests.

@rob @jon @pixelfed Try it again but then go back to the page where you requested the download the next day to see if there's a button there!

I'm still waiting for my FB download...

@jon @pixelfed woah! They name my instance Pixey 😸♥️
@jon @pixelfed didn’t even know importing was possible, very cool!
@jon @pixelfed I've been an early adopter of #pixelfed and I really want to love it, but the content just isn't there. I don't use Instagram either, but back when I did, I remember it being hard to put down, with endless content that was actually interesting. Not that I want pixelfed to become like that, but I need more than just cute cat photos and the same tech stuff I already get in masto. I'm keeping it installed, and I occasionally post a picture or two, but it's got a long way to go imo.
@jon @pixelfed how to select a pixelfed server? Any tips?

@rvandieen @pixelfed

The easy route is to just go with pixelfed.social. I plan to eventually move off of it and run a single-user instance as I do with henshaw.social once @dansup launches an official hosting solution.
